Much to my pleasant surprise yesterday, a parcel arrived at the Hotel Reception despite nobody having told me they were planning on sending one. Inside I was delighted to find a small Panetonne sent by Mum and Dad that surprisingly was still in one piece. It made a delicious breakfast this morning dipped in a warm bowl of chocolate soya milk.
Thank you very much!! P.S. the new thermals are also keeping me toasting despite Beijing’s temperature dropping to an all-time low!

Went for a traditional Beijing hotpot with Siqi last night. It looks a bit like a metal conical volcano with lots of hot carcoal inside and then a moat of water around the outside in which you can dunk lots of tasty nibbles (tofu, beef slices, spinach, seafood, noodles). Afterwards you can dunk the cooked nibbles in a delicious satay sauce and eat them while still hot. Yummy!
To celebrate the end of exams and as a leaving do for one of my classmates who is going back to France during the winter holiday, this evening I headed to Wudaokou with some French friends for a “Korean Barbecue”. This was my first time and it was quite an experience!
You basically kneel around a large table on cushions and in the middle of the table there is a barbecue. The waiters place red hot coals on a rack within the barbecue and then you can slot in all sorts of kebabs which turn on electric spits. You can also roast potatoes, garlic and onions on two hotplates on the side. Apart from the kebabs, we stuffed ourselves on “泡菜” (cold pickled veg and salad-like dishes), soup and rice. A lovely meal and a good crowd of people. Nice to try something different for a change.
